Choosing A Mooring In Antibes or Juan les Pins

Choosing A Mooring In Antibes or Juan les Pins

Antibes and Juan les Pins are two of the most popular towns on the French Riviera after Cannes and Nice.

Antibes has a rich association with the sea, being a trading post for Greek antiquity throughout history. It’s a popular tourist hotspot with a picturesque old town, interesting museums such as the Musée Picasso, Archaeology Museum and Peynet Museum and plenty of yearly events such as Les Voiles d’Antibes, the Art and Antique Fair and a bustling traditional Christmas market.

Juan les Pins is a seaside town with sandy beaches and a midsized marina at Port Gallice. Famous for being the birthplace of waterskiing, Juan les Pins hosts a well-known Jazz Festival every summer and is home to beautiful historic hotels such as the Hotel Juana and Hotel Belles Rives. Its location and its outlook, opposite the bay of Cannes and Lérins Islands, is stunning.

Benefits of choosing a berth at Port Vauban or Port Gallice
Port Vauban is one of the major hubs for yachting on the Med with over 1500 berths. As the largest marina in Europe by tonnage, it can welcome small pleasure vessels and superyachts up to 160-metres.

Since 2017, Port Vauban has been engaged in a €135 million investment project led by the Philippe Prost Architecture Studio. By rehabilitating existing infrastructures, creating new buildings and transforming its customer relations, Port Vauban aims to modernise and consolidate its international position. Part of the rejuvenation includes the delivery of a brand new Antibes Yacht Club for IYCA guests and a new IYCA quay, scheduled for completion in September 2022.

Guarantee of Use Berth Contracts (Contrats de Garantie d’Usage) for Port Vauban are now being sold for a period of 5, 10 or 21 years with the new leases starting at the beginning of this year. These phase out the prior system of leasehold contracts set up in 1972 for berths over 13-metres. This type of contract consists of guaranteeing its beneficiary a location in a defined area of the port. If it does not therefore entail the private assignment of a specific berth, it represents, on the other hand, for its beneficiary an opportunity to perpetuate a berth in the port, in return a contribution to the financing of new port works.

Location-wise, Port Vauban has a prime situation opposite Antibes old town and it has good transport links to major towns along the French Riviera including Nice, Cannes and Golfe Juan. Antibes itself is home to many yachting companies who service boats, therefore whatever owners and guests require from sailing ropes to Champagne to boat cleaning products is easy to source and get delivered.
Port Gallice’s 525 marina berths primarily accommodate pleasure boats and smaller yachts, under 43 metres and a maximum draught of 3 metres. Sheltered from the East wind, also well protected from westerly winds often stirred up on the Côte d’Azur. Blessed with views of the Cap d’Antibes, Lérins Islands and the Esterel Mountains in the distance, the marina has easy sea access, offering a quiet mooring.

A construction project at Port Gallice continues, including works to the quay to raise the height by 40 cm to adapt to rising waters. Also planned is the rehabilitation of 3000m² of buildings with the creation of premises for professionals, and a meeting room. A 3000m2 rooftop terrace will have a “dry garden” of 10,000 plants adapted to limited watering. The upper terrace of the shipyard will be made accessible to the public, creating a hanging garden integrated into the panoramic promenade of the Cap d’Antibes. In total, 15 million euros over 15 years will be invested in this project led by the Nice Côte d’Azur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI NCA). The end of the first works is scheduled for the third quarter of 2022, followed by new phases until 2027.
